It Begins!

My new job as Washington State Senator started January 10th with the swearing in ceremonies on the senate floor, with my family watching in the Gallery.  It was followed with the Governor’s state-of-the-state address on Tuesday.

I’ve been finding my way around the Capitol campus, sitting in committee meetings and talking with various constituents and interested parties.  It’s going to be an incredibly tough year, but there are many opportunities to reform government and get us on a sustainable path.

I’ll be sitting on three committees:

- Early Learning and K-12 Education

- Higher Education and Workforce Development (where I’ll be the ranking republican)

- Transportation

I think these committees match very well with the concerns of the district.

My focus will be on reforming our education system, creating jobs and opportunity and working on a budget and government that is truly sustainable, so we don’t’ find ourselves in crisis mode year after year.

On a side note, the Redmond Reporter ran a great article this week on my battle with cancer: http://www.pnwlocalnews.com/east_king/red/news/113505634.html

Going forward, I’ll be adding you to the legislative email list so you’ll get updates on my work in the legislature.  For legislative business, my new contact information is:

Thanks again for all your support to get me to Olympia.  I’m excited to begin my service and always want to hear from you!

A note from Andy:

I moved to Washington twenty years ago, and love the Pacific Northwest. But the state is headed in the wrong direction. After watching our government over the past few years, it’s apparent that our elected representatives have lost touch with the voters and their families. There is a fundamental disconnect between what the people want and need— and how our legislators represent us.

After standing on the sidelines watching our national and state governments spin out of control, I decided that instead of complaining, it’s time that I got involved.

It’s clear that we need more people in state government who understand what our families and businesses are going through in these tough times. We need elected officials who are courageous and willing to make the tough decisions (and compromises) to fix what is incredibly broken.

  • We need to reduce the oppressive regulations that hamper our businesses from creating jobs.

  • We need a state government that works to help businesses create the jobs that this state desperately needs.
  • We can’t continue to raise taxes on families and small businesses.
  • It’s time for the state to live within our means, just like every family and every small business does.
  • We can no longer ignore the problems we have in our schools and the congestion on our roads.

I am running, and will be elected, to address these problems head-on. I’m confident that my background and mix of experiences is what is needed to succeed in the legislature. My

combination of community involvement, time spent in our schools, and real world business experience will allow me to have an immediate impact in Olympia.

Please help me bring about the change that’s needed! Contribute, volunteer, endorse me, and tell five of your friends about me and how I can get the state turned around and headed in the right direction!
